    The American Swedish Institute is a gathering place for all people to share experiences around themes of culture, migration, the environment, and the arts, informed by enduring links to Sweden. The American Swedish Institute and the historic Turnblad Mansion have been mainstays for cultural education and engagement in Minneapolis since 1929.

    Position Description

    This is a part-time position to last through the term of our IMLS grant (two years). The role will be compensated at a annual rate of $21,000 per year ($20.19 per hour), paid hourly with the opportunity for benefits.

    The Project Archivist will:

    • Perform accurate and consistent copy and original cataloging
    • Arrange and re-house collection material in appropriate enclosures
    • Perform research necessary to create scope and content notes
    • Develop finding aid(s) to provide intellectual access to collections
    • Prepare collection inventories and content lists for use by staff and researchers.
    • Digitization (scanning) of selected collection items and application of metadata to digital images may be required.
    • Update PastPerfect database catalog.
    • Other responsibilities as assigned

    Requirements

    REQUIRED

    • Master’s degree in library or information science from an ALA-accredited program or a master's degree in archival studies, history, or other closely related field, with a concentration in archival management and theory or the equivalent experience.
    • Knowledge of descriptive metadata standards including MARC, DACS, and data structure standards relevant to archival control of collection materials including EAD.
    • Knowledge of archival standards and practices for preservation of documents, photographs and artifacts; assessing donations; and processing collections
    • Computer literate and technologically adept.
    • Ability to multi-task by managing competing priorities and multiple items concurrently
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Good organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to work independently after initial training.
    • Effective time management skills.
    • Ability to climb ladders, bend and stoop to access and move collection enclosures and lift archival boxes weighing up to 40 lbs. 

    PREFERRED

    • Experience working in a special collections including archival processing, arrangement, and description of collection materials.
    • Knowledge of current professional archival theory, standards and best practices in archival administration and preservation of a variety of formats.
    • Knowledge of and interest in the Swedish-American immigrant experience including historiography/history, geography, language and literature.
